As Christians we are called to seek justice for the oppressed. Isaiah 1:17 reads: 'Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.' What should we do? Begin by simply having an intelligent conversation in our homes, our churches, and our civic and social organizations. We need to see the plight of these young men and their families not as strangers but as our own family. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." We need to continue that conversation with our elected officials and government leaders. I have always heard the saying, "Silence gives consent." It's time to speak up before more lives are lost. We must bring change to the culture that declares open season on our men.
In this season of peace on earth, may the peace of God rest on us and the power of the Holy Spirit, stir us to seek justice. When we live out our faith, then we are truly building up the Kingdom of God.
