According to politifact.com, possession or use of any device that may disrupt the conduct of business is prohibited. I can understand that those Items could cause a disruption. But, to me, the weapons are more disruptive. I understand Second Amendment rights. The right to bear arms was and is one of the cornerstones of our government, but it's time to think about what really makes sense in 2015.
There have been far too many tragic shootings in recent months. I'm not talking about the instances where police officers have shot and killed unarmed black men. I am talking about several cases where children have accidentally killed other children and family members. A toddler in a store shot and killed his mother. A child playing upstairs with other children during a family party shot and killed another child. These are not isolated incidents, but one incident is one too much. We won't even discuss the numerous workplace shooting incidents or the mass shootings.
When we look at the allowed weapons, there is definitely a possibility that they, too, can cause a disturbance. With all of the talk about domestic abuse, substance abuse, and mental health issues. all that is needed is one disturbed person to grab the gun of a registered open carry weapon to cause a major tragedy. One person who hates the government, or his or her family or self to destroy the lives of so many innocent bystanders and many others simply doing the job they were elected or hired to do.
We are living and raising our children in a culture of violence. Matthew 26:55 says, 'If you live by the sword, you die by the sword.' It's time to let go of the 'Us versus Them' mentality and realize that at the end of the day, there is no 'Them.' We express our concerns about crime and violence, yet allow it to permeate our lives as a segment of the population glorifies their right to bear arms rather than glorifying God.
The Second Amendment is an important part of our history, but it should not be viewed as the specific rights of a few in its attempt to separate themselves from society. It makes me wonder. Just suppose, if a group of black men and women showed up at the Virginia State Capitol openly carrying their assault weapons. Would the Republicans still believe that balloons and flags are more disruptive than guns?
