Brand new neighbors have just moved into a house that had been vacant since last December. During these last three months I watched as workmen came to remodel the house. And I was overjoyed when I saw that the renovations extended to the shed. The door to the shed had been broken for years, hanging by one hinge and propped close with a cinder block. But to my dismay the door was never repaired, just painted. So when the new neighbors moved in and attempted to place some things in the shed, the door fell off. And now the door was just leaning against the door frame. With a broken door the shed is practically unusable for storage.
It kind of made me think about people. We usually present as polished and put together, wearing our faith like brand new siding. On the outside we look clean and pure, but under the surface shows our wear and tear. The door to our emotions may be broken in such a way the the least little touch causes us to become unhinged. We may lash out in anger with little provocation or collapse in utter despair at the smallest problem. We, like that shed, need a Master Carpenter.
The Master Carpenter, knows how to take down the broken doors of our hearts and mend them with loving care. The Master Carpenter repairs the hinges and replaces the rotten wood with new wood that He has provided. And the Master Carpenter lovingly resets the door in place and adds the lock of the Holy Spirit to keep it in the perfect peace of use. When it is completed the shed will be able to hold all sorts of things including love, joy, and peace. And will be able to give those emotions when the door is opened.
I hope that my neighbors eventually call a carpenter to fix the door on the shed, so that they can use it for storage. A master carpenter can repair the door to the shed. But only The Master Carpenter can repair us.
