This is only one of the many executive orders, comments, tweets, etc by our new president as he blatantly disregards the needs of the people and violates the First Amendment of the U. S. Constitution which reads:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
The campaign slogan, 'Make America Great Again,' seems to be code for let's make America the way it was before polite Christian people talked about or even thought about such topics as civil, gender, or religious rights. Where we lived in a 'melting pot' where our differences were meant to be assimilated and not acknowledged or celebrated. Where the 'good old boys ran the businesses and the country and where those of us in the margins 'stayed in our places.' Those days are gone and will never return and I, for one, will not stand back idly and watch the hands of justice turn backwards. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, "Freedom is indivisible, and when one man is enslaved, all are not free."
It's time for us, including those of us who consider ourselves to be 'good Christians' to speak up and speak out. We must contact our elected officials, write letters and emails, make calls, organize, and above all pay attention to how the rights of others are being stripped away. Let us remember the words of the poem, First They Came by Pastor Martin Niemoller.
First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me.
