A recent Show of Hands poll asked, "Do you expect your life to change significantly in 2016?" Sixty-five (65) percent of black people said 'yes' compared to 47 percent of white people. We still have a dream. But what is our dream today? Maybe our dream is for good public schools where our children receive an education and not just learn how to take tests Perhaps we dream about living in a world where fresh fruits and vegetables are readily available in all of our communities no matter what section of town we live in. Some of us may dream about having the financial resources to meet the needs of our families. And maybe some of us are dreaming of safe communities where we don't have to fear bullets tearing through our homes and neighborhoods and killing our sons and daughters.
As we celebrate the birthday of Dr, King this weekend, let's take some time to reflect on his dream and to form some dreams for our families, our communities, and our churches. This weekend, let's have a conversation with our families and friends about the dreams we have for our children, our grandchildren, the world they live in now and in the future. But we have to do more than just dream, its time to put some action behind our words. Volunteer to encourage or tutor a student. Provide a healthy meal to a shut-in. Write a budget and stick with it. And petition our elected officials for sensible gun control laws. And, if you see something, say something.
Dr. King dreamed of a better world. Together we can make a difference. Let's begin this weekend. Happy Birthday, Dr. King.
