Last Tuesday, I was interviewed as a part of the process of having my ordination recognized by the America Baptist Churches of the South at their 48th Annual Session in Atlanta. I had completed my ordination paper (20 pages) and was questioned by the ordination council last April. A separate packet had been submitted last October. This packet contained parts of the ordination paper with some additional information, including college transcripts. But it was during the interview as I was asked about such topics as Justification and Sanctification, as well as faith and the work of the Holy Spirit that I had the opportunity for some spiritual refreshment. It was all about "knowing, what you know, that you know" and communicating it effectively. The exercise made me reflect on what I believe and why I believe. The 'what' was easy. The 'why' took some reflection. I believe that we, as baptized believers in the risen Christ, should know beyond a shadow of a doubt, why we profess to be Christians. Taking the time to think about and articulate my beliefs either verbally or in writing provided me with some spiritual refreshment.
Last Sunday I was privileged to witness the baptism of my grandson and five others. As each was baptized they were asked questions about their faith. With Will being the youngest, he was asked some different questions. but listening to each of them made me realize that each of us need to take the time to explain what we believe as Christians and why we believe it. We should take some time for some spiritual refreshing.
It seems like the spring weather has finally taken a foothold. The trees are getting their leaves, flowers are blooming and gardens are being planted. Spring cleaning and refreshing are in full swing. So let's take the time to refresh ourselves spiritually. Spend some time prayerfully reading the word, make our walks 'prayer walks' as we enjoy the marvels of God's creation while praying intercessory prayers for our families, communities, and even the world. As our Heavenly Father refreshes the earth after a long winter, let us refresh our spirits in preparation for whatever is to come. There is no time like the present.
