I am grateful for my neighbors and community. When I moved into my North Chesterfield neighborhood 39 years ago, I actually integrated it. One of my neighbors told me that a meeting had been held to discuss my moving in and they agreed to ignore me. Most did, but some became my friends. Most of the old neighbors have moved out or died and the neighborhood is different than it was 40 years ago. It is now a diverse mixture of Black, white, and Hispanic families. On any given day I can be chatting with my white neighbors across the street, waving over the fence to my Black neighbors, or speaking with my Hispanic neighbors as the father practices his English skills with me and calls me 'teacher'. There are retired singles and couples as well as younger families with small children. To drive down my street you wouldn't see the diversity. But it's there and it is a shining example of what America could be.
