I am grateful for the freedom to speak, protest, and vote. I had planned to just say that I was grateful for freedom. But here, in the home of the brave and the land of the free, all of us do not enjoy equal measures of freedom. There have been too many instances of 'living while Black'. Mass incarceration is still a major problem and have become the 21st century version of slavery. And yes Black Lives really do Matter.
But with all of these issues I can sit comfortably in my home and write about it. I don't have to fear for my life because I choose to speak out. I can take a knee with Colin Kapernick and cast my vote on November 8th without being thrown into prison. People don't have to agree with me, but I still have the right to do say it or do it. I am grateful for that right but concerned that there are some who would like to take away or limit my rights to further their own agendas. And to that I say that it is more imperative than ever that we speak out, peacefully protest, and vote. Our lives depend on it.
